Ken & Judy "Dear Dr. Kahn, In early July we decided to have heart scans done at your facility, and were totally shocked to discover that Ken (my husband) had very serious blockages in his coronary arteries (a calcium score of 1500!). He had not been experiencing any symptoms. We immediately saw our family doctor in Windsor who referred Ken for a stress test, which did not occur until September. He failed the stress test, and before the day was over, had had an angiogram and was put on a waiting list for a triple bypass, to be performed in London, Ontario. Days later, on October 3, Ken was operated on. The surgery was very successful and Ken is recovering nicely. We can’t believe how fortunate we were to have had the scans done and find the problem before it was too late. We are spreading the good news about heart scans to everyone we can. Thank you so much for helping to save Ken’s life."
Stan Young "The EBT Heart Scan may have saved my life! My name is Stan Young, and I live in Ontario. I’m 69, a former athlete and I’m pretty in tune with my body. And I knew something was wrong. I went to a cardiologist. I was given a stress test, which I immediately failed. In fact, I couldn’t even complete the test, I was so out of breath! My doctor’s solution was to change my medication. Not knowing any better, I complied. Recently, my wife saw an ad for a Full Body Scan at a medical center just across the border in Southfield, Michigan. She had the screening, and it turned out everything was fine. When she got back, she told me I should have one too. So I scheduled an appointment. The EBT Scan took only five minutes, and I didn’t even have to take off my shirt. As soon as it was complete, I was asked if I had a cardiologist back in Ontario. They said I needed to have further testing without delay, because I had major blockage in my coronary arteries! When my cardiologist saw my scan results, he scheduled me for several tests with 3 different specialists. They confirmed the blockage, and promptly placed 2 stents to prevent a heart attack. Yes, I’m a big believer in the Heart Scan. In my case, I really couldn’t do anything until I had evidence of the disease itself, and the EBT Heart Scan gave me just that. If my scan turned up negative, it would have given me peace of mind. A few weeks ago, I retuned to EBT Heart & Body Imaging, this time with three of my close friends. What does that tell you?"
Hy Muroff, Windsor, ON “EBT detected my lung cancer in time to save my life. There’s a lot of talk about lung cancer today, and the news is pretty grim. But I’d like to tell you a story about lung cancer that you rarely hear about. Like many of you, I wasn’t convinced that a body scan was something I needed. After all, I was in pretty good shape for someone my age and I saw my doctor in Windsor for a regular physical. And even though I quit smoking 24 years ago, I had a chest X-ray at my doctor’s request, and it didn’t turn up anything. My wife had heard about the EBT body scan and kept after me to get one. She’s relentless, so I eventually gave in and scheduled a scan at EBT-Heart & Body Imaging in Detroit, fully expecting to receive a clean bill of health. Well, imagine my surprise when my body scan identified a tumor in my lung, right behind my heart! It turned out to be Stage I lung cancer. Dr. Marc Kahn at EBT-Heart & Body Imaging told me some interesting things about lung cancer. He said that the disease is fatal in more than 90% of all cases, because when symptoms begin to appear, it is usually too late. But when people without symptoms are screened with EBTlike in my casethe cancer is usually still confined to its original siteand potentially curable with surgery alone. Fortunately for me, I was able to have the tumor removed. And today, I’m cancer-free. If I had ignored my wifeand chosen not to have the scanthe cancer would have progressed. What a blessing it is to have access to a technology that can find disease before it becomes lethal. There are two lessons here: First, listen to your wife. And second, instead of waiting for symptoms to appear, learn everything you can about the EBT body scan today. You’ll live longer. I should know."
Mary, Windsor, ON "Dear Dr. Kahn, A while back I had a Heart and Lung Scan at EBT Heart & Body Imaging. The scan revealed a cancerous tumor in the lower part of my right kidney. On October 7th I had the entire right kidney removed. I am home one week now and am glad to report that I am on my way to recovery...though slowly, I am doing better each day. I was asked by you to keep you informed and that is why I am writing you. I wish to thank you from the very bottom of my heart for bringing this tumor to my attention and to let you know how very happy I am that it was found. I guess things happen for a reason. Thank you again and I am glad to have this whole nightmare behind me. God Bless."
Martin Guienta "Ever since I was a teenager, I realized I had a family history of heart disease; my grandfather had multiple heart attacks in his 40s. My father died at age 59 of a heart attack. Now I've had open heart surgery and I want to follow my progress and EBT helps me do that."
Jack & Barbara Kennedy "My husband Jack had a physical and a stress test. His cardiologist said he had a "heart like a 20 year old." But I knew he didn't feel right, so I encouraged him to have a body scan. He did, and it revealed significant blockage in four of his arteriesone of them at 90%. He had a stent put in, and the doctor who performed the procedure said to me that I may have saved his life. I said, "No, EBT probably did. I thought it would be the best investment in the world, and it was."
Richard Mattie "I had a physical in June 2002 that did not reveal any problems or anything suspicious. I wanted to get a clear picture of my heart, so I made an appointment for a heart scan. When I was in the office I was offered the option for an abdominal scan. My heart was fine, but the abdominal scan revealed a large tumor on the tail of my pancreas! I had it removed, and the doctor who performed the surgery told me that if I hadn't had the surgery, I could have been dead within 18-24 months. Having the body scan saved my life."
Terry Colone "I had quit smoking ten years ago. I always ate right, always exercised. My OB suggested I have a complete physical, cholesterol tests, etc. So I found a doctor and went for my physical. But since I didn?t have any symptoms of anything, he told me I didn't need any tests!"
"My daughter was going to EBT-Heart & Body Imaging for a full body scan, and I decided to tag along with her. Since I hadn't had the physical I wanted, I thought I would have the body scan too. Well, it's a good thing I did, because a cancerous mass was found on my lung. Fortunately, it was found early, so I had it removed. Now I have no physical restrictions whatsoever and I feel great. I know the body scan saved my life."
Robert Sharette "I've been a firefighter for 15 years. When I reached the age of 40 I thought it would be a good idea to get everything checked out. In the trade magazines every month you read about the firefighter deathsseven, eight per month die on the fire scene of a heart attack. I have high blood pressure, my cholesterol is high, so I had a full body scan at EBT Heart & Body Imaging. The scan revealed no buildup of plaque in my heart or arteries, no tumors on any organs. I was very pleasantly relieved. It was a big burden off my shoulders and a lot off my mind."
Along with saving lives, the use of low-dose CT scanning appears to be an economically sound means of screening people who are at high risk of lung cancer, researchers report in the journal Chest. Low-dose CT scanning cost effective in lung cancer screening
A recent study by Dr. Alan D. Guerci of St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, N.Y., concludes that electron beam computed tomography (EBCT) scoring of coronary calcification - known as a heart scan - is more accurate than conventional risk factor assessment in the prediction of coronary disease events. It marks the first study of its kind to follow a general population of non-symptomatic patients (more than 5,000 people) over a period of several years. The conclusions of The St. Francis Study provide the most convincing data of EBT's incremental value over the conventional risk factors used by family physicians and cardiologists. Harvey S. Hecht, MD reported in the American Journal of Cardiology August issue that cholesterol levels are not effective indicators of cardiac risk, and reducing an individual's cholesterol levels may not lower their risk of having a heart attack in the future.
